The AARP Foundation’s Tax Assistance Program helps taxpayers prepare their forms each year and has resumed service with the start of the 2022 tax season. Tax assistance sites will begin booking appointments for free services tax preparation and e-filing starting in early February, AARP said.

Tax-Aide will offer the same options as last year for preparing tax returns, including:

  • Low-contact models, which allow taxpayers to drop off their paperwork (or have it scanned) and come back for review
  • Fully virtual service
  • Virtual coaching service

Tax assistance sites may be affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but AARP is ensuring that each site is operated in a manner that keeps everyone safe, complies with state and local laws, and maintains account of the number of volunteers available.

Below they list the general documents needed for tax filing and recommend bringing them to your meeting:

  • Tax return(s) for the previous two years
  • Any correspondence received from the IRS and your state/local tax authority
  • Social Security cards and/or ITIN notices/cards or other official documents showing each individual’s tax identification numbers on your return
  • Government-issued photo ID for each taxpayer
  • Checking or savings account information if you wish to make a direct deposit of any refund or direct debit of any amount due
  • Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) for each individual (if applicable)

You will also need to provide proof of income and any reason for deductions you wish to claim. This usually comes in the form of a W-2 or 1099 form.

“Tax-Aide is a free service for anyone who needs help completing their tax return and filing it electronically,” said Cindy Gossett, AARP Tax-Aide Coordinator for Washington State. . “Our dedicated and certified volunteers will provide the same high quality service as in the past, but in a different way to adapt to COVID-19.”
